CAS, Service – Sustainability Project

On our Costa Rica trip, we also took part in a sustainability activity with the local coffee farm. We toward their farm, learned a lot about what they did, and tried coffee. As part of our experience, we also took part in a project Learning about how we could potentially assist the farm or provide new ideas for them to continue to be sustainable. They had questions for us about how they could use to power their kitchen’s ovens without harming the environment significantly. We proposed ideas like solar panels, windfarms, and other alternative energy collection techniques. However, we had to look at their situation very specifically. After some time, we learn the thing might be another option, that none of us would have thought would be sustainable. The farm has lots of excess wood, so we all spent more time brainstorming, and it seem like this was a viable idea. This connects to LO6. Sustainability is a really important thing globally. However our perspectives are really different comi...

CAS, Activity – Surfing

In Costa Rica come always taking part in many activities that include exercise. Surfing has been one of my favorites, and it has been a great challenge, but also very much fun. We took surf lessons at the beginning of our trip. It was quite hard at first, I can barely even stand up on the board. Luckily, the waves were smaller and the water was fairly shallow so we were able to keep practicing. This was a very tiring experience, and was surprising as I didn't think surfing would be so taxing. However you have to expend a lot of energy to get up on the board, move around, and go back out after you’ve surfed in. This connects to LO2. This was certainly a challenge, but I gain skills, as going in I had never been on a surfboard, and once we left, I had written the waves multiple times.

CAS, Creativity – Cultural Art

I've taken part in a trip to Costa Rica with some of my classmates, visiting a school in a town called Nosara. We took part in many activities, but one of these was an art project doing something connected to the culture of Costa Rica. One important cultural thing is related to the wheel of the oxcart. In the art class, and some of our first moments with the students, we bonded while making art. Making these art pieces was actually somewhat difficult. It was only a small space that we could paint on, and we had to add intricate details. These students have been painting before, and we collaborated to learn from them on how to make some designs. this connects to LO5, as many of my classmates from my school did not know how to make these art pieces well, but with collaboration, we were able to improve.
