CAS, Service – Sustainability Project

On our Costa Rica trip, we also took part in a sustainability activity with the local coffee farm. We toward their farm, learned a lot about what they did, and tried coffee. As part of our experience, we also took part in a project Learning about how we could potentially assist the farm or provide new ideas for them to continue to be sustainable. They had questions for us about how they could use to power their kitchen’s ovens without harming the environment significantly. We proposed ideas like solar panels, windfarms, and other alternative energy collection techniques. However, we had to look at their situation very specifically. After some time, we learn the thing might be another option, that none of us would have thought would be sustainable. The farm has lots of excess wood, so we all spent more time brainstorming, and it seem like this was a viable idea. This connects to LO6. Sustainability is a really important thing globally. However our perspectives are really different coming from the United States, wear alternative energy isn't incorporated in the same way. However we have learned a lot about alternative energy, and I believe that our work with this organization help them and also helped us through our collaboration.
